IMPROMPTU.

“Oculi sunt in amore duces.”

'Tis said the eye's a mental voice,
And tells a tale in ev'ry beam;
Betraying e'er the secret choice
Of melting love's impassion'd dream.
But if fond woman's brilliant eye
Betray'd her inmost feelings true;
How oft would flutt'ring bosoms sigh,
And grieve to find what eyes could do!
Each passion felt to be reveal'd,
What crimson blushes men would see!
The thought the heart would have conceal'd,
No modest secret then could be.
