If You Really Want To Eat Out...

Charlottesville offers a
variety of eating establishments
for those who have no time or
are simply not able to prepare
a meal.

Just a minute from the
Rotunda lies the Corner, age
old carousing spot for hungry
Hoos. The Virginian Inn offers
a traditional atmosphere for
quaffing beer. Sandwiches at the
Virginian are named for celebrities
and here, as almost everywhere,
you will be carded for beer.

A little further down the Corner
is the College Inn. Featuring various
club sandwiches, the restaurant also
provides full dinners. The White
Spot is, to use a term of
Hemingway's, "a clean, well-lighted
place." This is the home of the
fabulous Gusburger, staple meal of
many Hoos.

Plastic Fantastic

For heavy fraternizing or
impressive dating, Poe's is right.
Although sandwiches are served,
beer is pushed and Irish coffee can
be obtained. The highly ornate
decor, which includes a raven is
ideal for "plastic fantastic" lovers.

Up the hill near the University
theatre is the University Diner. One
can also reach the diner by means
of the railroad tracks, if coming
from the fraternity area. This diner
is famous for omelets, one-eyed
bacon cheeseburgers, doughnuts
and ice cream, and early morning
service. At this end of the Corner
also is Howard Johnson's, which
speaks for itself.

Charlottesville has three
cafeterias. The Ken Johnson
Cafeteria is in the Barracks Road
shopping center, the University
Cafeteria is on the Corner, and then
... food services on the Grounds. A
decent meal can be had at these
places for standing in line.

Pinball Wizard

If you live in the Alderman
dorm area, the Village Inn is not
too far for a walk. Go down
Alderman Road past the stadium
and bear right all the way. Good
food as well as pinball are offered.

On Route 29 South, towards
Interstate 64, one finds the crispest
pizza at Archie's, German
specialities at the Schnitzel House,
and fine oriental food at the
Chinese Dragon.

North on Route 29 is Fiji Island
(at the Downtowner Motor Inn.)
New this year, it features
Polynesian food and exquisite rum
drinks. Plastic leis and bright
dancing figures decorate the old
colonial style coffee room.

Further north, the Gaslight has
moved from Main Street to the
Barracks Road shopping center. It
offers an appetizing selection and
one of the most interesting
atmospheres in town. Also in the
expensive but tasty group are the
nearby King's Table, the Dutch
Pantry, and That Steak Place. Lord
Hardwicke's Inn has good sandwich
meals as well as mixed drinks.

If you really enjoy excellent
meals, try the Boar's Head Inn on
250 West, Gus' Steak House on the
same highway, or the Angus Barn
on Route 29 north near the
Holiday Inn, or the Library on
Emmet Street.
