...As Does The Faculty

It will be strange, for a while, to rely on
ourselves rather than our "informers" for
news of faculty meetings. There was something
rather appealing about writing an
"informed sources" lead for that type of
story. Those days are gone forever now, what
with the decision of the College Faculty to
allow representatives of the student press to
cover its meetings.

The last service our faculty sources
provided was to tell us that the vote was
overwhelmingly in favor of the minority
recommendation of the Committee on Student
Presence at the Faculty Meetings. This
report, in addition to calling for the admission
of the press, asked that another committee be
immediately formed to study the feasibility of
opening the meetings to any interested
student; we will await its report and trust that
it will be favorable.

This leaves the students with at least some
access to the decision-making process of the
College Faculty, if the news media does its job
properly. We trust that the radio stations and
the Virginia Weekly will join with us in
attempting to cover the College Faculty fairly
and thoroughly. And we hope that the
increased contact with the Faculty will help
build an atmosphere of trust and cooperation
that will eventually lead to the revival of the
University Senate with all branches of the
community represented. Such a Senate plan
was approved this week at the University of
Maryland. We feel that the structure of this
University lends itself very well to the type of
governmental process envisioned by those
who favor the Senate. It's high time there was
some action taken on it.

We would be remiss here if we did not
thank all the members of the College Faculty
who have, over the years, attempted to keep
us abreast of faculty meetings. It is as
gratifying to them as it is to us that their
services are no longer needed.
