XXIV IN THE FIELDS OF MÎT-RAHÎNEH

When I remember of that pleasant place
Which God gave unto Adam for to keep,
And how He took His Moses from the sheep,
And from the plough-tail to the chiefest place
Raised up a chosen prophet; when I trace
Plain on the tombs that guard old Egypt's sleep
How princes went to watch their servants reap,
And kingly farmers ruled a farmer's race,
Then do I think it is a royal thing
To work with sun and water on the land,
To labour in the fields till eventide;
For he who toils finds God is at his side;
He feels the Almighty's hand within his hand,
And, crowned with patience, of his fate is king.
