XXIV.

Enough if he hath decked thee with the wealth
Of his heaven-nurtured spirit,—showering gems
Of thought and fancy, coining youth and health
To gild with fame thy papal diadems;
Plucking life's roses with their roots and stems
To wreathe an altar which returned him naught
But the poor patronage of some suspected thought.
