Players Hit Road For Junior Highs

By LARRY ALAIMO

The Virginia Players'
Touring Company is currently
rehearsing its inaugural
production of William
Shakespeare's "The Taming of
the Shrew" to be performed in
Albemarle County and city
Junior High Schools during
January and February.

This is the first time the
Virginia Players have gone on
the road with a production.
They are hoping the success of
this venture will initiate a
regularly scheduled touring
company for Albemarle
County and, eventually,
Stafford County Junior High
Schools.

The Players' will be
performing a shortened version
of "The Taming of the Shrew"
adapted for Junior High School
students. Cast and scenery will
be travelling in a van, with the
actors doubling as stage crew in
order to facilitate setting up
the production at each of the
stops on the tour. The portable
scenery was designed by David
Weiss from the "Shrew"
sequences which he designed
for the Virginia Players'
production of "Kiss Me Kate"
earlier this fall.

Graduate drama student Ed
Steele and his assistant, Harriet
Resio, have directed "The
Taming of the Shrew" with an
emphasis on physical action
and broad comedy to entice
and capture the attention of
the young audience. Lois
Garren has created the
costumes and technical
director La Vahn Hoh has seen
to it that the Players' first
touring production will run
smoothly.

Junior High Schools
scheduled on the itinerary are
Buford on Jan. 11, Burley on
Jan. 12, the Blue ridge
Academy on Jan. 28 and
Belfield on Feb. 1. After a
brief respite the tour will
conclude with Walker Junior
High School on Feb. 8 and
Jack Jouett and Henley Junior
High Schools on Feb. 10 and
Feb. 11.

The cast is headed by Kiki
Smith as Kate, Dave Bell as
Petruchio, Mack Hattan as
Lucentio, and Frances Carter
as Bianca. Other players
include Woody Romine, Bob
Nersessian, Tony Gilbert, Bron
Platt, Peter Pentz, Tom Bunch,
Jack Staub, and Pat David.
