Cheery Message

On the backside of the form was
another cheery message from the
ex-vice-president reminding everyone
that they should support the
Democratic Party's efforts to combat
Republican dollars flowing
across state lines by sending candidates
into states with which they
have nothing to do.

Special offers included an "I
Love Hubey" button for only 75
cents; a Lady Bird Johnson sweatshirt
for $2.50; and Senator Fred
Harris' new book, "The Do's and
Don'ts of Successful Party Leadership,
$4.95 (Harper Bros., 17
pages).

To top it all off, the ex-vice-president
had included an inspiring
- if brief - message congratulating
all those who had contributed to
the Democratic Party in the last
two years. Among the notables
whose names appeared: Rose Kennedy,
$25.10; Colonel Sanders,
$77; and John V. Lindsey, $6.50.

Finding no postage-paid,
business reply envelope enclosed,
we quickly forgot about the whole
matter and turned our attention to
some junk mail which looked more
promising; K-Mart's semiannual
thermal underwear sale.
