January 28, 1858 from Maria Barrett to Dr. James H. Minor

I am happy of the
opportunity to write you by the
Stevens which will sail in few
days from Monrovia for Balti-
more ; believing you will be pleas
ed to her from me and family,
and especially, how we are
getting along.

I thank God that I can
bless his name for his kindly
providence over me and mine and
that we are all the living to
praise His name. Charles
and myself are unwell, but the
rest of the family are getting
along in health.

Master James, will you please
send me 2 pair black gaiters No 6 and
7s, 1 pr Shoes No 10 for Charles and No 8 for
Dick and a pair of Sunday boots for
Young No 12o—1 box soap, and one
whip Saw for Charles—please send
me some calico, and white cotton cloth

and anything you think will be useful
to me. You know we are in a new
country; and have to commun or to
live for ourselves. Give my love to
Aunt Rachel, Charles and Dick
send their love to Robt Sharp
Give my love to Mistress Minor
and all my friends both white
and colored.
