[Great God, who dost the proud abase]
The Lord bringeth low, and lifteth up.

Great God, who dost the proud abase,
And giv'st to humble souls Thy grace,
Bring down my nature's virtuous boast,
And lay mine honour in the dust;
Then answer a mere sinner's cry,
Where in the lowest deep I lie,
Then from the gates of hell bring back,
And save me for my Saviour's sake.
