Poetry, Music At Prism

By Tom Moran

Tonight the Prism Coffeehouse
and Unicorn Magazine will present
an evening of poetry and music by
many very talented artists.
Members of the University and
general community are invited to

show their support for the young
writers who have been partly the
catalyst and partly the product of
an increasingly active creative
writing program at the University.
The sponsors hope that their
presentation will represent at least a
partial fruition of this program.

Among those reading will be
Mary North, Neal Snidow, Paul
Breslin, and Mike Watterlond, all
graduate students who participated
in a reading sponsored by the
Graduate English Club earlier this
year. Mr. Watterlond will soon be
published in the Southern Review,
and is current holder of the Balsch
Fellowship in creative writing.
Before coming to the U. Mary
North studied with poets Charles
Olsen and Robert Duncan. Two
other Unicorn staff members will
be Kerney Rhoden and Editor
Carcy Cochran. The other student
on the bill is Tom Moran, who has
read at the Prism on several
occasions previously.

Professor Alan Williamson of the
English Department and his wife,
Anne Winters Williamson, will both
read their excellent material. Mr.
Williamson has been published
in Poetry, Shenandoah, and Chelsea,
and will soon appear elsewhere. He
is currently writing a book on Hart
Crane, Allen Tate, and Robert
Lowell. Mrs. Williamson has
contributed to Kenyon Review,
Beloit Poetry Journal,
and is
forthcoming in Poetry. Both Mr.
and Mrs. Williamson have studied
with Robert Lowell.

In order not to assault the
audience with hours of unbroken
poetry, readings will be performed
between sets by Tim Oksman,
Dawn Thompson and Katie
Surgies. Hopefully, Raleigh the
out-of-hand M.D. will also astound
us with his autoharp. Admission is
free, refreshments will be available
as usual. The Prism on Rugby Road
opens its doors at eight and the
show starts at nine.
