Viewers' Hatred

In essence, what I am saying is
that "...tick...tick...tick..." is no
different front "Easy Rider," "Z,"
or any of the other movies I have
mentioned. It appeals to the base
emotion of hatred in all its viewers
(I read Andrew Sarris' column that
in the deep south audiences applauded
when Fonda and Hopper
were shot in "Easy Rider" and I
myself heard people say, "Man, I
wanna go out and kill a redneck")
The fault, of course, lies not simply
in the movie. Consider again the
large number of Agnew supporters.
However, the time has come to
separate the idea from the individual.
Labels can only be misleading.

Most importantly, we must
come to see (filmmakers and
audience, politicos and supporters)
that the truth lies neither on the
left nor on the right, but somewhere
else. Perhaps that is the
truth.
