Testimonial Dinner

In small print at the bottom of
the sweepstakes sheet was a note
informing the reader that all those
falling to reply to the announcement
would find their own name
added to the list of contenders for
party chairman.

Wrapping up our half-eaten tuna

illustration
fish sandwiches in the glossy sheet,
we turned our attention to the
remainder of the enclosures. First
on the list was a coupon entitling us
to a $1.50 reduction at the
upcoming $100-a-plate testimonial
dinner in Smyrna, Delaware, for the
state's most recent Democratic
governor, 97-year-old Julius P.
Tidewater. The scheduled guest
speaker was Chicago's Mayor
Richard Daley, who was to address
the gathering on "Guerrilla Warfare
in Urban America."

Next, a contest to see who could
guess where and for what Sargent
Shriver will run this year. Among
the selections: Governor of Maryland;
Senator from New York;
Mayor of Peoria, Illinois; sit tight in
Paris for another year.
