Dating Service Opens Business
Just recently, the Student Council
of The University approved as an
official school organization The
Student Dating Service which was
created early this fall. The object of
The Service is to provide University
students with dates at nearby girls
schools. Our immediate goal is to
provide dates for the weekend of
February 27 thru 29. A number of
neighboring girls schools have already
indicated their cooperation.
Dates are arranged on the basis Tickets For The 8:15 Concert At Lane High School Are Available At Newcomb Hall And The Door For $1.50 For Students
of a questionnaire which both
parties fill out. All that a Virginia
student need do is pick up a
questionnaire, fill it out and return
it to the Dating Service. We then
will give the student the name and
pertinent information on a girl
Members Of The "Paul Winter Consort" Pose During Preparation For Tonight's Performance
then need do is contact his date and
arrange for their weekend. There
will be a small $0.25 charge for the
guy to cover the basic expenses of
the club. There will be no charge
for the girls.
A desk will be open on the
second floor of Newcomb Hall
from noon to 1:00 on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting
next week, for those students who
wish to use our service. Students
should be reminded that dates are
arranged on a first come, first
served basis.
We certainly hope that our
organization will be of great service
to The University and that all
students will feel welcome to use it.
ACLU Sponsors
In your article of Feb. 17
concerning the forthcoming discussion
by representatives of the
Southern Conference Educational
Fund, you omitted the name of a
sponsoring organization. The American
Civil Liberties Union of
Central Virginia is co-sponsoring
this event in conjunction with the
ACLU's nationwide fiftieth anniversary
celebration.
Those who share our concern
with protecting the freedoms guaranteed
under the Bill of Rights are
invited to join us. The basic
membership fee is $10, student
membership $3. Checks should be
sent to the American Civil Liberties
Union of Virginia, 1205 West Main
Street, Richmond, Va. 23220.

Band Alive
Although accurate in its description
of the University's football
band of the early 1940's, your
article of February 18, "Band-With
Fond Memories" was misleading in
its summary dismissal of current
activity in this area; moreover it
was unfair to the nearly 80 students
and members of the faculty enthusiastically
participating in our
program. At present the University
has two bands, with some overlap
in membership; a Pep Band of
between 20 and 30 men which
performs under student direction at
football and basketball games, and
a Concert Band, of which I am
conductor, numbering about 60
players. This group has given two
substantial programs of major
symphonic repertoire in Cabell Hall
during the Fall term and will
present two similar concerts this
Spring. While the marching band is
indeed a thing of the past and
although its uniforms hang (now,
however, in mothballs) in closets in
our rehearsal room, the Concert
Band's present level of musicianship
is such that we have been able to
make a distinct contribution to the
musical life of the University
through our performances. We
invite your readers to observe for
themselves the Concert Band's
current state of health and animation
at either of our forthcoming
concerts.
