Janet Dewart Of Folk Duo "Bob and Janet"

By Paul Larsen

About four and a-half months
ago Bob Crawford, a first-year-man
at the University, was wandering
through The Prism Coffeehouse
when he met Janet Dewart. The
two began talking and found they
had common interests in music.
Crawford has been playing the
guitar for more than six years
and Miss Dewart was brought up
in a jazz oriented environment.

The two decided to try working
an act together, billed themselves
as "Bob and Janet," and have
been booked in Portsmouth, Richmond,
and Charlottesville ever
since. Just last Tuesday "Bob and
Janet" auditioned at The Cellar
Door in Washington and were
signed to play with Phil Ochs on
May 29th.

Music Heritage

"Bob and Janet" arose from
a folk and jazz heritage and have
developed this background into a
repertoire which encompasses these
two areas of music as well as folk rock.
The format of their performance
is the appearance of Crawford
first, who does a set of about
six songs and then he brings on the
strikingly attractive Miss Dewart.

The duet's material is largely
from song makers such as Tim
Buckly, Richie Havens, Phil Ochs,
Donovan, with several of their
own songs and arrangements.

Original Work

When the two perform as a
team, their material is a combination
of both original work
and traditional songs done to their
own arrangements. "Black Blossom,"
written by Ruth Knapp,
and their arrangement on "Summertime"
highlight this portion
of the show.

"Bob and Janet" will be appearing
at The Prism tomorrow
night from 9 to 1. With their
mounting popularity and highly
respectable reputation, and especially
with their upcoming appearance
at The Cellar Door, this
may be one of the last times to
see their performance before fame
and high prices arrive.
