Letters: SAC Backs Move
We, the Student Athletic Council,
consisting of all captains or
co-captains of varsity sports and
organized for the purpose of
acting as an advisory committee
to the Director of Athletics and the
student body, feel it is necessary
to issue the following statement
concerning the recent football plan
of players living in the dormitories.
It should be recognized that although
our views and opinions
are naturally influenced by a desire
for excellence in the athletic
realms, we have not divorced ourselves
from student sentiments considering
the aforementioned policy.
We approve and are strongly in
favor of Coach Blackburn's approach
in handling the carefully
planned innovation of Virginia
athletic policy. We commend him
on allowing team participation in
the final decision regarding the
policy, understanding that this is
not a permanent plan but one
flexible and subject to change in
future years.
We recognize that there may be
limitations in this plan. However,
we feel for a number of reasons,
the primary ones mentioned below,
that this innovation will be
beneficial. We think that the team
unity which should be developed
by living together will generate a
team rapport more conducive to
winning. Also, an expanded
training meal program will guarantee
the players the opportunity to
receive well-balanced and nutritional
meals which are so necessary
to an athlete's physical output.
In conclusion we would solicit
the support of the student body in
this attempt to improve our football
program.
