On To Army

We don't know when we've seen the University
more excited about a football game
than it is about the Cavaliers' battle tomorrow
on the banks of the Hudson.

Remembering that remarkable Saturday
afternoon at Scott Stadium three years ago,
the Cavaliers are determined once again to
silence the scoffers. As Captain Mal MacGregor
told a group of students Wednesday
night, he's never seen the team more
spirited and ready to go.

Waiting for them at West Point will
be an Army team keen on revenging the
humiliation of that 35-14 disaster.

Anyone who has ever seen the now
class photo, reproduced in the Corks and
Curis and The Cavalier Daily, of the dismayed
cadets who came down here with
their team in 1964 can appreciate what's
at stake for Army. We expect to see the
same expression, though, on some of the
same faces tomorrow.

At a school whose students have often
gone to the stadium more eager to drink
than watch the game, we're pleased to see
that so much enthusiasm has been stirred
up and so much appreciation felt for the
men who kept in training all summer and
have practiced all the early fall.

Although the Cavaliers will be venturing
into extremely hostile territory, it will make
a big difference to them to know that
hundreds of their fellow students and possibly
even more alumni will be there with
them.

While we are disappointed that more
students, particularly first-year men, did not
take advantage of the Spirit Club and
University Union's "Midnight Special" bus
to New York, we are pleased to see that
so many people from Charlottesville are
driving up.

We are also glad to hear that President
Shannon will be aboard the plane with
them.

And as far as the alumni boat trips up
the river we've heard so much about, they'll
put Henry Hudson to shame.

The whole weekend, in fact, has taken on
the character of the epic trip to Philadelphia
in 1949, a tribute to the affection and
enthusiasm the University and its graduates
feel for football in general and the 1967
team in particular.

Best of luck, then, to all the Cavaliers
at West Point this weekend, both on the
field and off.
