[God hath no shape; no art nor instrument]

STATIUS THE HEATHEN. THUS TRANSLATED.

God hath no shape; no art nor instrument
God's image can in metal represent;
In good men's minds and hearts alone doth he
Delight to dwell, and there engraven be.

THUS TRANSLATED.

Physic denies me help, nature must yield,
Strength now succumbs, and weakness wins the field;
Hippocrates I do consult in vain,
Nor can Apollo ease me of my pain,
Medeas' herbs and art are here unsure,
And Circes' charms cannot perform my cure,
Pæon's prescriptions fail, in this my grief,
And Æsculapius can give me no relief.
