Transfer Girls Bemoan
Datelessness, Shy Boys

A five to one ratio of boys to
girls-hog's heaven for the dating
coed-right? While this may be the
case for first year girls the transfer
women are reporting a somewhat
cooler reception from the male
population of U. Va.

The majority of the girls are
housed in the Mary Munford
(where is that anyway?) dorm, secluded
behind the pine trees and
disturbed by nothing much more
than the sound of traffic and tennis
balls.

Pine Manor, Briarcliff, George
Mason, Sweet Briar, Smith, Radford,
and William and Mary are
some of the places where they
spent their first one or two years
before opting for Virginia. As was
expected the largest contingent
comes from Mary Washington College.

Fear And Immaturity

As a group they find the University
academically stimulating and
demanding. However, on the social
side the consensus is the their male
classmates are reacting to them
with fear and immaturity.

Just one example, the last two
seats to be filled in a class are most
often the ones to either side of a
girl. Kooties maybe. "I or a girl to
meet the boys in her class she must
be the forward one," reports one
attractive third year girl. "You usually
have to be the one to sit next
to a boy and you have to be the
one to initiate the conversation.
Once you've stated talking he's
usually pretty friendly."

One transfer girl commented: "I
haven't met one aggressive guy
here." Then quickly corrected herself:
"Of course once you're on the
date he's aggressive." Another coed
offered the opinion that "a guy is
scared to date a girl here because
he'll have to see you every day." A
spot check reveals that a majority
of the transfer coeds' dates have
been blind ones arranged by
friends; very few have dated boys in
their classes.

Darkness Of Night

Just as the process of arranging a
blind date by phone offers emotional
protection, the darkness of
night seems to bring courage to the
hesitant U.Va. man. Girls walking
at night are constantly shouted at
by boys in passing cars or propositioned.
One girl reports that one
evening as she walked across Nameless
field she was stopped by six
boys who offered her $100 apiece.
"I almost started to cry right
there."

One second year girl interviewed
asked "Please just write in your
article that we aren't all dated up
until Faster and that we are human."
Her blond companion added
"I just wish they would come
over to the dorm and talk to us. If
there is no one in the lounge they
could buzz one of the buzzers and
if they didn't like the girl who came
down, they could say they had
buzzed her room by mistake."
