Lazar's Concert Band
To Perform Tonight

The University Concert Band,
conducted by Joel Lazar, Assistant
Professor of Music, will present its
annual Spring concert this evening
at 8:30 p.m. in Cabell Hall
Auditorium. Tuesday's program the
Band's final performance of the
season, also marks the completion
of the group's first year under Mr.
Lazar's direction.

For their May 5 program, the
55-piece Concert Band will offer
three major works drawn from the
operatic repertoire; the Overture to
"Nabucco," Giuseppe Verdi's first
successful opera, the Intermezzo
from Samuel Barber's "Vanessa,"
first heard at the Metropolitan
Opera in 1958, and the symphonic
interlude, "Siegfried's Rhine
Journey," from Richard Wagner's
music-drama, "Die Gotterdam-merung."

In this performance, the version
prepared for concert performance
under Wagner's supervision will be
expanded by interpolation of additional
material from the opera,
transcribed for band by Mr. Lazar.

The concert will also include a
suite of English Renaissance harpsichord
compositions by William
Byrd, transcribed by Gordon Jacob,
and Vincent Persichetti's Pm,"
the composer's second original
work for concert band.

Tickets at $1, general admission,
and $.50, students, be obtained
in advance from Mincer's,
Newcomb Hall and the Department
of Music office, or may be bought
at the door.
