EARTHSBENEFACTORS.
Toil on, ye godlike Spirits, toil: plough yeThe Furrow, and therein the good Seed sow,
Truth's divine Seed! but seek not here below
Remuneration: for the more ye be
Like Christ, so much the more ungratefully
Shall ye be treated! for ye shall rise no
Statue or Column, Festival or Show,
To cherish in Men's Hearts your Memory:
But like the Echo of a most vain Thing,
Your Names shall pass away without a Trace:
'Till the true Crop, in due Time ripening,
Shall vindicate for you a higher Place
In Glory's Shrine, than Conqueron or King,
Whose Trophies Worms and Dust shall soon efface!
