SONNET.

[Hushed Hour! which doth Heaven's Hour of Earth appear!—]

Hushed Hour! which doth Heaven's Hour of Earth appear!—
Whose depths of rest and peace none, none may sound!
Grey twilight hour, with tenderest shadows crowned,
Thou art a time most dreamy and most dear;
And all is quiet now—afar and near;
Earth's fever seems soothed down by calm profound—
Faint, shapeless shadows float in peace around,
Low wordless whispers tremble to mine ear!—
I break the chains of fear—grief—memory!—
As I have ofttimes found—once more I find,
While this strange stillness broods o'er earth and sky—
Thoughts crowd on thoughts within the awakened mind,
Full, fervent, far-aspiring still!—on high
Lifting the world with them, or leaving it behind!
