Love gave us sanctuary!—and sense and speechOf what we were at last, at most, at best;
Love gave us strength and faith to manifest
The soul's majestic virtues each to each.
We learned from love, what love alone can teach,
How love is dying in hearts that long for rest;
Love showed us how man's life is lordliest;
Love put the stars of thought within our reach ...
Love gave us guidance, and our right of way
Into his Paradise: and there, alone,
We were with love together day by day;
Till we, in silence, breathless at the goal,
Free of each other, burned and blent to one,
Shared the last loneliest secret of the soul. ...
