In peace, our perils drew not to a close,
While 'midst ourselves we found more dang'rous foes.
Remember ye, the storm of battle o'er,
What other tempests lour'd along the shore!
By gusts of faction how the States were tost,
The feeble links of federation lost!
How round the land despondency prevail'd,
And bosoms bold in battle then first fail'd!
