Soon show'd our chief, retiring to his farms,
The pomp of pow'r for him display'd no charms;
He show'd th' ambitious, who would mount a throne,
Greatness is seated in the mind alone.
With what delight his homeward course he sped,
With all his country's blessings on his head!
Our revolution to conclusion brought,
His public toils complete he vainly thought;
But heav'n reserv'd him for more glorious deeds,
Whose height the scope of human praise exceeds.
