Record Sinks

Virginia, now 7-4, went to the
banks of the Severn in hopes of
drawing a little national attention
by upending the nationally ranked
Midshipmen and nearly pulled it
off. A large and tough team, Navy
played a very physical game but
could not muscle a score during
regulation to the credit of Cavalier
fullbacks Ed Marks, Chip Williams,
and Phil Russell. First year goalie
Scott Peyton also had a fine day in
the net.

Offensively, the story of the
contest was frustration as the
visitors came close several times.
Forward Jay Connor bit the
crossbar once and had two other
shots nick the frame of the net.

"We made one of our very best
efforts," said Coach Jim Stephens
of his team's play. "It was every bit
as tough to lose as the score
indicates." After regulation play
did not bring a verdict, the game
was sent into an overtime period
which also proved fruitless and led
to the second overtime.
