Letters To The Editor

Harbaugh's Half-Green America

Dear Sir:

Your reporter has it wrong. I
said several times the other night
that I was Consciousness II and
one half.

I do not care to be identified
with all the Consciousness it's still
running around, much less the
Consciousness I's.

William H. Harbaugh, II½

Volunteer Or Else

Dear Sir:

As a Selective Service Board
chairman, who has sent hundreds of
young men to fight for their
country, I believe I am qualified to
speak about the draft.

Every year many fine young
Americans volunteer to serve in the
Armed Services and protect the
country from its enemies. Most find
the army a rewarding experience
and even those who are killed and
maimed, I am sure, do not regret
their service.

I personally wish to see an end
to the draft. It should not be
necessary to use conscription to
raise an army. Rather, I would like
to see every able bodied young man
volunteer for service thus making
conscription unnecessary. But the
fact remains that those who don't
volunteer, for service should be
drafted. Furthermore any young
man who not only refuses to
volunteer, but tries to evade
induction, should be tried for
treason and taken out and shot!

The voice of America cries out
"What have you done for me lately,
young man? Do not let that voice
go unheeded.

Right On

Dear Sir:

I have been following with great
interest the recent "water bed" ad
controversy and I feel compelled to
contribute my views of the issue for
the edification of your readers,
even though I am sure you won't
print it.

The Women's Liberation and
other radical groups have
complained that the advertisement
in question was another example of
male oppression. Furthermore they
have claimed that the ad exploited
not only the young woman (who
no doubt was quite adequately
compensated for such
"exploitation") whose body was
pictured in the ad, but all women in
general.

What foolishness! As all know,
the business of this country is
business, and if pictures of the
female anatomy help sell water
beds, then I say Right On. Activity
in the sellers market contributes to
a healthy economy and strengthens
our fight against those who would
oppress us (ie. Communists,
Catholics, Kneegrows, and liberal
Republicans).

Everyone knows that the only
women who participate in Women's
Lib are the ones who are frustrated
and find the "water bed" ad
objectionable because they
themselves wish they had some
other use for a water bed than
sleeping. This is just another
example of female "penis envy"
and I wish that Women's Lib and all
other Electra cases would shut up
and quit interfering in the business
of the man's world.

(First of all we are not "Dear
Sirs;" we are brothers and sisters,
and don't forget it As to your
complaint about "oppressors," we
quite agree with you in your
assessment of liberal Republicans,
but that's all. Your assumption that
the members of Women's Lib have
only one use for waterbeds is
fallacious as members of our staff
can testify. Finally, as far as your
argument about "penis envy" goes,
we are quite sure that you must be
ignorant of the fact that friction
between the sexes is caused by just
the opposite: "pussy envy," from
which we are sure you suffer

Keeping His Interest

Dear Sir:

As a frequent advertiser in the
Cavalier Daily, I applaud your
March 29th editorial on Sexism!

One disturbing thought lingers
with me however. I wonder if the
Sweet Briar Women's Lib
Contingent would have been
equally "disgusted" if the same Ed
Michtom's ad in question were
aimed at women buyers and
featured the latest fashion "fad"
for women with this copy: "KEEP
HIM INTERESTED... 'HOT
PANTS' ARE THE THING FOR
SPRING!!"

What say you, Shannon,
Pammy, and Valeria?
