Joel Lazar
Takes Honor
The first Boston performance of
Gustav Mahler symphony in its
original form has resulted in an
honor for its conductor, now a
University faculty member.
Joel Lazar, assistant professor of
music and conductor of the
University Orchestra and the
Concert Band, has been named an
honorary member of the Bruckner
Society of America. Among the
other honorary members of the
society which was formed to
further appreciation of the music of
Mahler, are conductors Leonard
Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan and
George Szell.
Last August, before joining the
University faculty, Lazar conducted
the Harvard University Cantabrigia
Orchestra, a student orchestra
founded by him, in a
recently-discovered 1893 version of
Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D
major. The only other performance
of the symphone in five parts since
its rediscovery was by the New
Haven Symphony in March, 1969.
