The Workes of Benjamin Jonson | ||
II. To my Book.
It will be look'd for Book, when some but seeThy title, Epigrammes, and nam'd of mee,
Thou should'st be bold, licentious, full of gall;
Wormewood, and sulphure, sharp, and tooth'd withall,
Become a petulant thing, hurle inke, and wit
As mad-men stones: not caring whom they hit.
Deceive their malice, who could wish it so.
And by thy wiser temper, let men know
Thou art not covetous of least selfe-Fame,
Made from the hazard of anothers shame.
Much lesse, with lewd, prophane, and beastly phrase,
To catch the worlds loose laughter or vaine gaze.
He that departs with his own honesty
For vulgar praise, doth it too dearely buy.
