Richard L. Godine

The death of Richard L. Godine takes
from this community one of its brightest
young leaders. Since taking his degree in
economics at the University almost 20 years
ago, Mr. Godine had maintained an
unwavering interest in the University and its
activities. His appointment as Director of
University Development Programs earlier this
year brought to the institution a man of
distinguished business background to carry
out a stepped-up effort to secure
much-needed funds for the University's
advancement. Mr. Godine wasted no time in
putting together a comprehensive
development program and it is hoped that the
momentum that he set forward will not be
allowed to falter.

Mr. Godine was widely known in the
Charlottesville community as a business leader
and as a person concerned with all levels of
education. University students who came to
know him in his brief tenure as development
director found him a willing listener and
receptive to their ideas about the
development of the University.

An avid sportsman, Mr. Godine was an
All-American lacrosse player while a student
at the University and through the years had
participated greatly in the strengthening of its
athletic programs.

His loss will be felt throughout the
University and the Charlottesville community.
