BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX (1090-1153):
French CISTERCIAN MONK, and Abbot of Clairvaux, whose book Loving God is regarded as a classic of medieval MYSTICISM. He praised knighthood and supported both the Order of Templars and the Second Crusade. In his heyday he was probably the most influential man in Europe.
