Tasso and the Sisters | ||
Ye marvel, perchance, why so swiftly flew
Such numberless wings at the words that were said?
Oh! well the sad Spirits of Ocean knew
'Twas lowly to worship a young Maiden dead:—
And all that had stray'd
From their watery dwelling—
On mountain-tops laid,
Or the black clouds compelling;
On the winds mounted high,
In forest shade sleeping;
Or on tall trees that sigh
Their wakeful couch keeping,—
Their revels destroy'd and their sweet slumber broken,—
All swiftly return'd as those wild words were spoken.
Such numberless wings at the words that were said?
Oh! well the sad Spirits of Ocean knew
'Twas lowly to worship a young Maiden dead:—
And all that had stray'd
From their watery dwelling—
On mountain-tops laid,
Or the black clouds compelling;
On the winds mounted high,
In forest shade sleeping;
Or on tall trees that sigh
Their wakeful couch keeping,—
Their revels destroy'd and their sweet slumber broken,—
All swiftly return'd as those wild words were spoken.
