BY THE SCHLUCHSEE.

Grey twilight out of the ForestComes flying on downy wings,
The bats fly forth to meet her
With petulant twitterings.

The gathering dews are bendingThe long grass drowsily,
In meadows left by the mower
This night for the moths and me.

The beautiful moths come hoveringLike restless ghosts in white,
The fond white moths fly trooping
To burn at my bed-room light.

Soft night sinks down on the Forest,I sink on my Gasthof bed,
And sigh for some splendid candle
To burn my wings at instead.
