Four Local Movie Theatres
Provide Good Entertainment

Charlottesville, as you may have
already discovered, offers very little
in the way of entertainment. Thus,
you should not be surprised when
you find yourself-and your date,
if you're lucky-sitting in one of
Charlottesville's four first-run
movie theaters weekend after
humdrum weekend.

You may, however, be surprised
to discover that our fair city is far
from the last stop a film makes
after its release; in fact, the theaters
usually book fairly recent issues. If
you like second, third, or
thirty-third runs, you'll have to go
to the Ridge Drive-In on Route 29
North or the University Union Film
Series in Newcomb Hall Bookstore
every Thursday and Sunday
Evening.

The closest of the first-run
theaters is the University, located a
block cast of the Corner on
University Avenue. Currently
playing there is "Zachariah," a rock
western with Country Joe and the
Fish. Starting tomorrow will be
Bernardo Bertolucci's "The
Conformist," with "The Panic in
Needle Park" following on the
23rd. Also coming to the University
in the next month will be "The
Hellstrom Chronicle," China" and
"Walkabout."

The University's sister theater,
the Barracks Road, is located at the
north end of the Barracks Road
Shopping Center. "Adios Sabata"
closes there today, with Bruce
Brown's "On Any Sunday" opening
tomorrow. Future attractions will
be "The Horsemen," "Two A
Penny," "Doc," and "The Love
Machine."

The Cinema is located
downtown on Main Street, about a
twenty-five minute walk from the
Grounds. "Get Carter" opens there
today, with "Klute" and "The
Omega Man" coming in the next
few weeks.

The Paramount is situated
diagonally across the street from
the Cinema, and is currently
showing "Shaft," with "Two Lane
Blacktop" scheduled to follow,
tentatively on Friday. Coming soon
will be "Ryan's Daughter," "The
Andromeda Strain," and "Unman,
Wittering, and Zigo." The
Paramount will also have special
one-day showings of popular recent
films, and promises another of its
series of weekend late night
sexploitation films.

Admission to the theaters ranges
from $1.50 to $2.00, and the films
usually are shown on a 1, 3, 5, 7,
and 9 p.m. time schedule, although
it's best to check before you go.

We can't guarantee that your
movie-going will always be pleasant,
but we do promise to keep you
abreast of all the first-run films in
town, with Cavalier Daily film
critics providing "overnight"
reviews in most cases.
