CUPID IN THE WOODS

In the woods we went a-straying
Through the summer's golden hours;
Cupid too was there a-playing,
Gathering hearts as we the flowers—
While we lingered, sweet delaying,
Lo! he saw and gathered ours.
Startled by this loss appalling,
When the hearts we first did miss,
“Cupid, Cupid,” we went calling,
“Hast thou had to do with this?”
Then, his answer swift forestalling,
Lo! we found them in a kiss!
