Promoters Say 'Go'
On Fluvanna Concert
By Steve Grimwood
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
The word is go for the Fluvanna
County Popular Rock Festival
during Memorial Day weekend. The
organizers of the Festival, Trips
Unlimited, were contacted in their
Alexandria offices by The Cavalier
Daily, and they reported that all
"necessary permits" have been
obtained.
Medical and traffic control personnel
have been contracted, along
with a volunteer security group.
Liability coverage for the festival
has also been arranged with one of
the county's largest insurers. All
that is left to do is sell tickets. Only
three day tickets are available for
$20.00 each.
Fluvanna County has a total
population of 7,000 and a few
residents have become alarmed at
possible large number of people
who might attend the festival.
George P. Smith Jr., former Commonwealth
Attorney of Fluvanna
who was still in office when
negotiations began, said, "The
majority of the county is against it.
There will be many problems -
another Woodstock.
"Handling crowds will be the
biggest problem. Fringe problems
should include the use of drugs,
sanitation, and trespassing on private
property" But Deputy Sheriff
N.B. Winfrey said that his office
will cooperate in the event that the
proposed festival is held.
Trips Unlimited has leased five
parcels of land in Fluvanna, the
smallest being 500 acres and the
largest nearly 1200. One of the sites
will be chosen for the festival. They
also announced that no alcoholic
beverages will be allowed at the
festival.
The Fluvanna County Popular
Rock Festival will last for three
days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Canned Heat, John Sebastian, Ike
and Tina Turner, Steve Miller, Tim
Hardin and Pentangle are scheduled
for Friday. On Saturday there will
be Richie Havens, Johnny Winter,
In Cold Blood, Steppenwolf and
Country Joe and the Fish. Janis
Joplin, Chuck Berry, Electric Flag
with Mike Bloomfield, Jack Bruce
and Delaney & Bonnie will appear
Sunday. Negotiations with other
groups are still in progress.
At the present, the only people
who are able to cancel the concert
are the Trips Unlimited promoters.
Further developments will be reported
as they occur.
