The Hungarian Quartet Will Play Tonight

Part Of The Artist Series, The Quartet Will Feature Works By Mozart, Bartok And Beethoven

On Tuesday, March 3 the
Tuesday Evening Concert Series
will sponsor an appearance by the
highly acclaimed Hungarian Quartet,
a string ensemble known
internationally by such adjectives as
"inspiring," "magnifique," and
"great."

Although the quartet, founded
in 1935, is of European origin, its
four members are no strangers to
American campuses. A considerable
amount of their time is set aside for
teaching, and they are as famous
for their master classes as for their
concerts. During the last summers,
they were artists in residence at
Colby College in Maine; previously,
at the Aspen Festival. In the course
of many years, they also taught at
the University of Colorado, the
University of California in Los
Angeles and the University of
Oregon, among others.

For its program, which begins at
8:15 p.m. in Cabell Hall Auditorium,
the Hungarian Quartet has
chosen masterworks of the chamber
music repertoire. The first of these
is Mozart's K. 575 Quartet, the first
of a series of compositions dedicated
to the man who commissioned
them, the king of Prussia.

Also featured will be Bela
Bartok's fifth string quartet, a work
premiered by the Hungarian Quartet
and a score which the group
studied with the composer, a
personal friend of the foursome.
And, concluding the concert, the
quartet offers one of Beethoven's
finest scores, the Opus 59, No. 2
quartet, played in honor of Beethoven's
bi-centennial.
