Madmoments: or First Verseattempts | ||
THE MIND'S ALLSELFSUFFICIENCY.
What tho' the limbs be fettered, Heaven's lightShut out from the dim Eye? can tyrant's art
In its vain mockery inflict a smart
Like that he feels within him? can his Might
Rob the pure soul of that which renders bright
E'en the dim Prison's gloom, an upright heart
Where crime and selfdisturbance have no part?
It is not so! Faith's glance can put to flight
Legions of nether Ill, and in his breast
Man can create an Eden where on high
And heavenly hopes his wearied Heart may rest,
Transforming Time into Eternity!
There may he taste true Freedom, still more blest
Than those who scorn him, for he scorns them equally!
