Dear Sir:

When a French philosopher
is quoted in French to support
an argument for abolishing the
language requirement, the
generous reaction would be to
conclude that the writer is
pulling our leg. Unfortunately
for him, Mr. Walter
Bardenwerper seems to be dead
serious in the main body of his
article.

But he is so busy setting up
straw men and knocking them
over that he seems not to
notice the almost comical way
