AN EPIGRAM ON EPIGRAMS.

Hail thou short, but pleasing Verse!
Simple, keen, polite, and terse;
Forcing smiles, yet giving pain,
From thy sly satyric vein:
Full of compliment or wit;
Who forgive can ne'er forget:
Dubious sounds that strike the ear,
And provoke the Cynic-sneer.
Yet what Cynic dare thee blame,
While thy name is “epigram!
