The Virginia Players

KISS ME KATE

The Virginia Players will open their 42nd season tonight
with a production of Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate." It will
be the first musical the Players have presented in four years.

The 1949 musical chalked up over 1,000 performances
on Broadway, won the Antoinette Perry ("Tony") Award
for outstanding musical achievement, and later became a
successful MGM film.

The story of "Kiss Me Kate" will be apparent to anyone
who is familiar with Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew,"
the former being the Broadway equivalent of the latter.
Love, romance, song, adventure, the presence of
Shakespeare, and the flavor of Tin Pan Alley are all
contained within the show.

The Virginia Players' production has been directed by
fourth year drama major Peter Webb. David Weiss has
designed the sets and the lighting, and Lois Garren created
the costumes and the original choreography. The cast
includes Joe Taylor, Mardi Billings, Pat Prinz, David Gwin,
Ed Steele, Ken Lambert, Cissy Friant, and a large number
of supporting singers and dancers.

Tickets are $2.00 for all performances, with student
tickets available at $1.50 for the Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday performances. Season tickets are still available
at $10.00 each.
