First County Clerk

William M. Cook, the first Clerk, held the office
for eight years, when he resigned, and Frederick
Johnston, who during this time had been Clerk of
the Circuit Court, was chosen as his successor. Mr.
Johnston filled both positions most acceptably until
1865, or for nearly twenty years.
