We strayed in Time's dream-haunted night]

We strayed in Time's dream-haunted night
And watched the voiceless stars of thought
That thro' the warp of darkness wrought
Their frail and faithful threads of light.
But when life's passion blurred our sight,
We cried, “It dawns! Desire has brought
That guide our souls have vainly sought
For life, the way-worn eremite!”
Yet from the dazzled eyes of youth
The fire, subdued to sunset, cleared
At last, and we were left with truth:
For there, above the sunset's bars,
Still changeless and on high, appeared
The boundless night, the steadfast stars.
