UTRUM HORUM MAVIS

So sweet, so comely, and so pure!
And is it then for you
That I am call'd on to endure
Whate'er you please to do?
You gave me access to your heart:
You led me to suppose
That I had some peculiar part
In all its pangs and throes:
That I, and not the other men
Whose passion you had known,
When once I could come back again,
Might claim you as my own.
And now, I have come back to find
How slight, how volatile,
Your preference was, and how unkind,
How treacherous, your smile!
Well, you will doubtless seek relief
In some one else's arms;
And I shall learn the worth of grief,
And of a woman's charms!
