Rock Hill Called Racist

Dear Sir:

Yesterday as I was entering a
grocery store in the Barracks Road
Center complex I was approached
by a woman selling raffle tickets for
an upcoming benefit drawing, with
a portable T.V. as a . Not
wanting to part with the ticket
price I hesitated; then, expecting a
charity to be involved, asked what
organization was the
drawing. The woman replied that
proceeds would go to various
student groups at the Rock Hill
Academy. Recalling a rumor, I
refused to buy a ticket.

Several minutes later I realized
that I had been hasty, I went back
to the woman, now surrounded by
Rock Hill cheerleaders, and asked if
I had benn correct in assuming Rock
Hill to be a segregated private
school. She replied that it was. As I
turned to leave I told her, quite
politely, that she now knew why I
had not bought a ticket. As I
walked away she hysterically cried,
"They probably wouldn't let you in
anyway."

I pass this experience on in the
hope that other students, if approached
in a similar manner, will
check on the sponsoring group, and
will decline to support the functions
or existence of a racist
institution such as Rock Hill
Academy.

In addition I ask that UVA
students join me in boycotting
Rock Hill Academy by (1) making
those who support it (businesses
that carry its advertisements, civic
organizations that contribute to it,
parents that enroll their children in
it, etc.) feel the pressure of moral
disgust, and (2) by openly refusing
to patronize relevant businesses and
individuals.

My personal goal is to make
Rock Hill supporters embarrassingly
aware of their involvement and
guilt, and if possible to contribute
to peaceful change or destruction
of this institution. In order to
achieve this goal I need information
about the structure and membership
of this school. Anyone who
wishes to offer such information,
dares to join me, or feels that I am
wrong, may contact me through my
home address, RFD 2. Box 419A.

Dear Sir:

It had been my hope that when
Richard Gwathmey laid down the
quill last year I would be spared the
rhetoric of liberal hysteria which so
characterized The Cavalier Daily
under his leadership. To my disgust
however I find the same spoutings
of liberal horseshit offered up for
my digestion as in the past. Now, I
am not against freedom of the
press, since I obviously do not have
to read your paper if I find it
obnoxious and objectionable. But it
seems unfair, and, if you will allow
the word, un-American, to force
students to support a newspaper
whose ideas may be ideologically
repugnant to them.

Therefore I make the following
request to whomever one makes
requests of this nature to: that all
monies which go to The Cavalier
Daily from my comprehensive fee
be returned to me, and that The
Cavalier Daily be instructed to print
one less rag to compensate for the
decrease in their forced circulation.

Since I don't have to buy the
New York Times, I should not have
to buy The Cavalier Daily:

Upon receipt of this letter, we
found many staff members who go
to Rugby games, a sport which Mr.
Blumberg plays and which is
supported by the Student Activities
Fund. We don't like the formations
the team uses. We are prepared to
ask that the Rugby Club return all
monies from our Student Activities
Fee which go to Rugby and that it
be prepared to play one less game if
the ensuing shortage so necessitates.

Dear Sir:

It appears that we, the students
of the University are in for a year
of immature and sensationalistic
news-handling by the editors of The
Cavalier Daily. I refer to the
editorial of Tuesday, September 16,
in which they speak of President
Nixon as "Tricky Dick."

Whatever political beliefs the
editors espouse, let them show the
respect due to the title of "President,"
if not also to the man who
currently holds that position.
