This strange contraption was designed and built by four architecture students: Jim Rhodes, Ron Marts, Mark Altman, and William Ancarrow. These four, under the direction of William Zuk, a professor in the School of Architecture, created the mass of metal tubing as a structural model for a study in compression and tension. It was built on a scale this large so that stress and strain could be measured and also for its sculptural beauty. Lacy's plumbing was kind enough to donate the metal pipes needed for the project.
