Oxygen Measured

The portable equipment can
be used at the stream to run a
continuing test on the oxygen
concentration in the water.
Previously, scientists had to
rely on isolated samples of test
water as the sole basis for
determining water quality.

A probe measuring
temperature and oxygen
output is placed in the water
emitting every 15 seconds
voltage proportional to the
oxygen output concentration
of the water. The information
is recorded on tape to be coded
by the University's computer
center and interpreted by Mr.
Hornberger and Mr. Kelly. The
research study is being
conducted under a grant from
the National Science
Foundation.

Professors Devise System For Monitoring Photosyntheticity And Respiration Of Stream

Signs of excess oxygen
production "would indicate
excessive plant growth, which
causes a whole host of
problems known as
eutrophication," Mr. Kelly
explained.

One possible application for
the new technique would be to
detect early changes in a
stream affecting its health.
They will be able to predict the
rate as well as the effects of
eutrophication in streams.
