SCENE FIRST

—THE CHURCH.
PRINCESS
(entering the Church.)
Oh! let the terrour, which compell'd my perjury,
Plead for its pardon!—Heaven! I fear thy wrath;
No longer pure of heart, my sweet affiance,
In thy love, fled with my innocence and truth.
Thy Mercy is Omnipotent,—but Justice too
Is thy dread Attribute.—Imploring pardon,
Dare I to hope protection in my guiltiness?
Hope, Mercy ne'er recorded my rash Oath.
