A prey to doubts, till now unknown,The maiden marked the change;
Which, to her gentle nature, showed
Mysteriously strange;
She tried by soft caresses to
Recall his usual mood;
But only added fuel to
The fever of his blood;
Till, frightened at his vehemence,
She homeward bent her way,
Nor could his oft-repeated prayer
Prevail on her to stay.
