Joint Concert Planned
For This Weekend

The University of Virginia Glee
Club will host the Chatham College
Choir from Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, Friday in a joint
concert to be held in Cabell Hall
Auditorium at 8:30 p.m.

The Glee Club, under the
direction of Donald Loach, will
open the program. The Chatham
College Choir, a women's chorus
directed by Lorenzo Malfatti, will
alternate with the Glee Club for the
remainder of the program, each
group performing several selections
at a time. At the end of the
program, the combined choirs will
sing a piece by Aaron Copeland
from "The Tender Land."

Admission prices are $1.00 for
students and $1.50 for general
admission. Tickets will be on sale at
Mincer's. Newcomb Hall, Fi-Fi
House in Barracks Road, and at the
door.

This spring, the Glee Club will
be going on a European concert
tour. The present itinerary includes
Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and
Austria with concerts in Montreux
(near Geneva). Florence, Padua,
Innsbruck, and Munich. The cost of
the trip will be paid almost entirely
by the members themselves, but the
Glee Club has started several
fund-raising projects to help case
the financial burden.

One of these plans has been the
cutting of a record last month for
sale to students, alumni, faculty,
and to the general public. The
record is entitled "A Shadow On
The Sundial," the title of one of
the "Summer Songs" written by a
former president of the Glee Club
and set to music by a former Glee
Club director.

Some of this songs on the record
are "The Good Old Song," "From
Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill," two
football yes, and other songs of the
University, including the true alma
mater ("The Good Old Song" is not
the original alma mater).

Other more serious pieces of
music have also been included in
the recording, such as Dietrich
Buxtehude's "Cantate Domino,"
which was performed at last year's
Christmas concert; a set of four
madrigals by several early
composers; Randall Thompson's
"Testament of Freedom," the
words to which come from the
writings of Thomas Jefferson; and
Francis Poulenc's "Laudes of St.
Anthony of Padua."

The price of the record is $5.00.
Records may be ordered directly
from the Glee Club in Old Cabell
Hall or through the Alumni
Association.
