I regret that the motion that I
presented to the AAUP Chapter on
May 8 erroneously attributed
Professor Floyd's resignation as
chairman of the Mathematics
Department to James England's
failure to be promoted.

The purpose of my resolution
was not to reopen the England case.
Professor England has resigned. It
was my intention to have the
AAUP seek clarification as to the
nature and composition of the
Faculty Promotions Committee and
the criteria that it uses for
promotion.
